Spearheaded by our National Trends and Services facet, The Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated participated for the third time in the annual Gullah Festival at Honey Horn (Plantation) on Hilton Head Island, SC. The Gullah Festival has been celebrated, in February each year on Hilton Head Island for 29 years. The celebrations include people in the Gullah Geechee/Native Islander Community and the Low Country, Sea Islands, many of whom are descendants of the Gullah Geechee people.
Each of the Program Facets participated with an area of focus in Services to Youth (bracelet making); the Arts (artists displays, quilted aprons); National Trends and Services (information on Domestic Violence, information on Heirs Property Preservation);
International Trends and Services (African Musical Instruments); and Health and Human Services (blood pressure checks and management).
People of all ages and cultures were in attendance and took advantage of the services and activities provided.
The Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is on a mission to get folks out to vote! We have gotten behind our National Trends and Services facet to get the message (flyers) out at a Gullah Food festival, a Get Out The Vote Rally, and through providing snacks and drinks for a "Get Souls To The Polls" bus service (in collaboration with local churches and organizations).
Many of us have already voted or plan to early vote ... we don't play!
Keeping with the spirit of National Voter Registration Day, the National Trends and Services facet of the Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated spent the day registering young first time voters from the University of South Carolina Beaufort's (USCB) Bluffton Campus in partnership with the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Office of Student Life (OSL). Thirty-five (35) students were registered and treated to a "Float for a Vote" sponsored by the SGA and OSL. We thank USCB with partnering with us to "Link Up The Vote!"
We are also collaborating with local churches and organizations to help get the vote out in the upcoming election.
The Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated's National Trends and Services facet once again had a successful Wills Clinic where they partnered with the Center for Heirs Property Preservation located in Charleston, SC and the Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Ridgeland, SC. Twelve (12) wills were completed. We, along with the center, "help families protect and keep their family land...build generational wealth and...grow “working” landscapes.
They also took this opportunity to register voters if they were not already registered.
On February 24, 2023, the Hilton Head SC Chapter of The Links, Incorporated's National Trends and Services facet partnered with representatives from the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation located in Charleston, SC. Attorneys Elizabeth Wellman (presenter) and Antonia Frances gave a presentation followed by meeting one-on-one with a few participants to answer more detailed questions and sign them up for having their wills drafted. Many thanks to Reverend Kardell Ferguson, Sr. of the Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Ridgeland, SC for hosting this event.
Councilman John A. Kemp of Jasper County was in attendance for the purpose of gathering information that he could bring back to his constituents.
On October 15, 2022, members of the Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of The Links Incorporated hosted a Wills Clinic at Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Ridgeland, SC. Attorneys and volunteers from the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation of North Charleston, SC completed free wills for the community. The focus of the event is to prevent the loss of heirs’ property due to the lack of intent surrounding its distribution that is provided by a will. Facilitated by our National Trends & Services Facet, under the leadership of Laura Singleton-Fogleman, the Chapter partners with the organization several times throughout the year to provide this service as well as financial literacy training to our community.
National Trends and Services
In March 2022, the Hilton Head (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated gave back to the community today by partnering with the Center For Heirs’ Property Preservation to host a drive-thru Wills Clinic at Queen Chapel AME Church. Having a Will is one the ways to ensure that title to property will cleanly pass to known heirs and will not be subjected to the myriad of problems that come with having unclear title.
